Monday Musings with Maureen

One of my favorite things about destination weddings is getting to explore a new town or different area of the country. Whether your guests have been to Garrett County before or not, they will be grateful for recommendations of fun things to do before or after the wedding, especially if they’re making a whole weekend out of it. I love getting a Welcome Bag with local treats and area information, so be sure to throw in some custom recommendations. Your guests will also be interested to know why you chose to get married here and what this place means to you!

Since Summer is just around the corner, these recommendations are geared towards warmer weather weddings. Garrett County does summer VERY VERY well.

Boat Cruise – Wisp Resort

A sunset cruise around Deep Creek Lake is the perfect relaxing alternative to a traditional rehearsal dinner, or an option for guests that are looking for a way to enjoy the lake the night before a wedding. No need to rent a house on the lake or rent a boat, just secure your spot on a local boat tour!

Wine and Cheese Pairing – Firefly Farms

Your foodie family and friends will thank you for this recommendation! Schedule a wine and cheese pairing with Firefly Farms and enjoy an intimate setting with family members you may not have seen in awhile, or a romantic evening with your wedding date. I also love this idea for a classy bachelorette or bachelor party a few days before you say I Do!

Black Bear Wine and Words – A Quiet Oasis in the Middle of McHenry

If you’re attending an evening wedding and perhaps the weather isn’t cooperating, this is a great place to stop in if you have a love for reading and sipping wine. Purchase a glass of your favorite red or white and peruse the collection of used books.

Whitewater Adventure – Adventure Sports Center International

The whitewater rafting course at ASCI is an awesome outing for a large (or small) group looking for adventure. If you came in to town early, or are staying a day or two after the wedding, this is a really fun group activity at a local treasure. Be sure to visit their website for more information about this man-made whitewater course and to see reservation options. ASCI has some great photo opportunities and spots to watch your family members barreling down the rapids!

Hiking – Swallow Falls State Park

Another local favorite, Swallow Falls has hiking trails along the Youghiogheny River with various falls along the way. Go swimming, wade under the falls, or just hike along the beautiful trails. Bring a picnic lunch and make sure to stop by the Lakeside Creamery ice cream trailer!

Since wedding weekends can really fly by, I love the idea of planning an activity to catch up with family and friends if you have a little extra time. Sprinkling in an extra activity or two with those you don’t get to see too often will add to the memories of a beautiful weekend celebrating love!

Maureen Myers is a writer and architectural designer near Deep Creek Lake. She lives in Accident, MD with her husband Tom and Golden Lab Parker. Check out more of her Garrett County adventures on her website, Coffee on the Mountain.

Scenes and thoughts from deep creek

Well hey now! I thought for sure it had been more than seven months since I blogged last! Wish I could do it more…and plan to as soon as the new JFP website comes out.

I’m not sure I’m starting anything consistent here, just sharing some random thoughts and scenes from Deep Creek on this random Wednesday…

Jessica is amazing and she made us feel so comfortable! Having her capture our wedding was like having my best friend with me for every moment! Jessica's photos are fun, whimsical, and sophisticated!

We are not a stoic couple and did not want posed (or trying-too-hard) photos! Jessica was able to capture our personalities and the elegance of the day! I can't stop looking at our photos!

"Jessica is amazing!"

The best decision I could have made for my wedding was hiring Jessica Fike as a photographer! I was in a wedding prior that she was a photographer for and seeing how organized and easy and strategic she was to work with is what convinced me! She makes you feel so comfortable and helps teach you how to pose and smile and look so natural! She keeps you on schedule throughout your day and captures so much emotion in her photos. She is worth every penny plus more!

" the best decision."
