This blog post is for anyone wanting to get married in the woods. Among the trees, on a trail, maybe in hiking shoes…
I’ve had quite a few of these weddings in my almost-15 years as a wedding photographer and over the past few years in particular, I’ve realized it’s one of the settings that brings the most inspiration when I’m behind the camera. Leaping across ferns, walking along streams, finding the perfect composition that shows off the trees and the magnificence of a couple exchanging vows beneath them…there’s added energy, excitement and whole new level of beauty.
Whether you’re a hiking enthusiast or feel most alive while in a forest…or you just really love our local state parks, let this be your own inspiration for getting married in the woods…
Highly recommend putting together some special getting ready time before your woodland ceremony. It might be very different from the traditional wedding day story, but it’s still a story to tell and it starts with these moments…
This was an especially unique elopement day. Not only was I photographing two of my friends secretly marrying, but it was POURING RAIN and had been raining for days…hence the raging water you see next to Rachel and Elliott in this ceremony scene…
Ceremony site possibilities: on a trail, in an opening between two trees, in the tall grass with the fog rolling in the background, in a sea of ferns, next to a stream.
And after the ceremony, let’s keep walking the trail, through the woods, under the forest trees…and capture it all just a little bit more. 🙂
Many of these photos were taken during elopements at Savage River Lodge here in Garrett County, MD. An exceptionally unique and appropriate place for such an event. So easy to get away, be alone, treat yourselves to a cabin or yurt, delicious food and top-notch service.Â
The others took place at our local state parks – Swallow Falls State Park is a big favorite, but Deep Creek Lake, New Germany, Big Run, and Herrington Manor State Parks should also be considered for elopements, small weddings and sometimes even the larger weddings.

Scenes and thoughts from deep creek
Well hey now! I thought for sure it had been more than seven months since I blogged last! Wish I could do it more…and plan to as soon as the new JFP website comes out.
I’m not sure I’m starting anything consistent here, just sharing some random thoughts and scenes from Deep Creek on this random Wednesday…

Jessica is amazing and she made us feel so comfortable! Having her capture our wedding was like having my best friend with me for every moment! Jessica's photos are fun, whimsical, and sophisticated!
We are not a stoic couple and did not want posed (or trying-too-hard) photos! Jessica was able to capture our personalities and the elegance of the day! I can't stop looking at our photos!

The best decision I could have made for my wedding was hiring Jessica Fike as a photographer! I was in a wedding prior that she was a photographer for and seeing how organized and easy and strategic she was to work with is what convinced me! She makes you feel so comfortable and helps teach you how to pose and smile and look so natural! She keeps you on schedule throughout your day and captures so much emotion in her photos. She is worth every penny plus more!
