Choosing A Photographer

On Tuesday, I was reminded of the photography industry’s overcrowded-ness:

This picture that was shared over and over again on Facebook is a true testament to the current state of the photography industry and the decisions that people are making when it comes to who takes their wedding pictures or family portraits. In my opinion, and I think a lot of photographers would agree, the industry is unfortunately overcrowded with people that have a “nice camera” and aren’t professionals who are getting hired. I understand that not everyone is going to love my style or pay my prices, which are two HUGE factors when choosing a photographer, but I’m bothered by the fact that people are hiring those that aren’t professionals. So I’m here to educate!

At first, I was going to focus this post on the reasons why you shouldn’t choose a photographer, but instead of being a negative Nancy, I’m going to switch gears and tell you why you should choose a photographer (always try to think positive!).

You should choose a photographer because…

1. They are a professional! First and foremost, I think this is the most important criteria when choosing a photographer…for any event! According to Dictionary.com, a professional is one that is “following an occupation as a means of livelihood or gain” and “a person who is expert at his or her work.” A professional has educated themselves, practices their craft and has significant experience in their field. Whether it be a wedding or a family portrait session, you definitely want someone who knows what they’re doing. From the technical elements of the camera, to the editing behind the computer, to posing knowledge and overall client experience, a professional will know how to handle everything. Images that are not-on-purpose out-of-focus are not professional!

2. You love their style! There are all kinds of styles of photography…studio, editorial, whimsical, art, ethereal, photojournalistic, and so on and so on. Each photographer (hopefully) has their own style and you want to make sure their style matches up with your expectations. If you’re looking for outdoor family portraits that are fun, light-hearted and casual, you might search for a photographer that has a whimsical and photojournalistic style. If you’re looking for a wedding photographer that has a super artsy and unique style, search for one that has an artful and ethereal style. If you like what they show in their portfolio and can imagine yourself hanging such pictures on your wall, that’s a good sign you’ve found a good photographer for you!

3. You have or could have a connection with them! I’ve put a lot of effort and emphasis into including as much of myself in my business and brand as possible because I want my clients to make a connection with me. Photography can be a HUGE deal to some people (especially engaged couples), so I think it’s important to have more than just a simple business relationship. Making more than a business connection with your photographer leads to a personal, friendly connection and it’s much easier to be comfortable in front of the camera when you’re friends with your photographer. I’m not saying you should only hire your friends, but search for a photographer who might have similar interests as you or who makes you feel good after reading their about section on their website. I think this is especially important for engaged couples because your wedding photographer will spend a TON of time with you on your big day! The last thing you want is to have clashing personalities with that photographer and not feel comfortable in front of their camera.

I hope these reasons will educate people to choose the right kind of photographer for them because photography is WAY more than just having a “nice camera.” Photography is an art and it’s technical. Photography is editing and creating a style. Photography is capturing special moments in time that may never happen again. Photography is creating and sharing memories that will last a lifetime. Do you want to trust your photography with someone who isn’t a professional, doesn’t match your style or with someone with whom you don’t feel comfortable? I hope your answer is “no.”

A final note: I am not at all trying to condemn the efforts of those newbies trying to make it in the photography industry. If you’re just starting out and hoping to make a business for yourself, do it the right way. Build your portfolio by shooting friends and family, but let them know you’re still new and if they’re looking for real pictures they should seek a professional. Take classes at a local community college or seek a photography mentor. Educate yourself, practice as much as possible and gain experience before you place the responsibility of capturing other people’s memories upon yourself.

Great post! I love it when people hire me because of my style and not pricing. You can pay 5 cents or $500.. if you don’t like the images, you don’t like them. Same goes for what you DO love!

Scenes and thoughts from deep creek

Well hey now! I thought for sure it had been more than seven months since I blogged last! Wish I could do it more…and plan to as soon as the new JFP website comes out.

I’m not sure I’m starting anything consistent here, just sharing some random thoughts and scenes from Deep Creek on this random Wednesday…

Jessica is amazing and she made us feel so comfortable! Having her capture our wedding was like having my best friend with me for every moment! Jessica's photos are fun, whimsical, and sophisticated!

We are not a stoic couple and did not want posed (or trying-too-hard) photos! Jessica was able to capture our personalities and the elegance of the day! I can't stop looking at our photos!

"Jessica is amazing!"

The best decision I could have made for my wedding was hiring Jessica Fike as a photographer! I was in a wedding prior that she was a photographer for and seeing how organized and easy and strategic she was to work with is what convinced me! She makes you feel so comfortable and helps teach you how to pose and smile and look so natural! She keeps you on schedule throughout your day and captures so much emotion in her photos. She is worth every penny plus more!

" the best decision."
