Black and White

A moment for the

Or a whole page...

There's a reason the photos are black and white.
It's not just a willy nilly decision.

Black and white means you can strip away distractions so there's focus on the subject, the emotion, the movement, the moment.

Black and white allows you to feeeel.

Black and white is a way of creating art.

Photos are art. I am a photographer and I'm also an artist.

You wouldn't ask Van Gogh to change the color of one of his paintings, right? So let's keep the black and white. I think they're pretty darn cool.

My artistic beliefs when it comes to
black and white photos

The funny thing about all this black and white talk is that I LOVE COLOR. #morecolorplease and #livelifecolorfully !!!

But when I edit, there are some photos that I believe look best in black and white. It's usually photos of moments that I think can be seen better without color. And when looking through a collection of photos, the black and white ones ALWAYS catch my eye first.

For Kelly and Sean's Deep Creek wedding, it was mostly black and white photos that I chose when highlighting their day on social media. Black and white moments, to be exact. Every single photo in this small collection is a moment. Undirected, observed and captured moments.

Simple, beautiful, real. Black and white.

A recent wedding in black and white...

Kelly and Sean during their first look. I photographed from the shoreline, through some trees and bushes...and let them have their moments.

The M Family on their first Deep Creek vacation. What a fun morning! Cold, snow, and plenty of laughs and little shenanigans.

And yes, moments.

This family was immediately friendly and completely comfortable in front of the camera. In between the stand-and-smile photos, they had ideas and personalities of their own to share. So I just kept snapping. So many unposed, undirected, natural moments and of course they look amazing in black and white!

My favorites? The older "kids" really seizing the opportunity to make some great photos. Their smiles and laughs become a bigger  focus when there's a lack of color.

Playful, beautiful, real. Black and white.

The M Family on the frozen lake. I directed them to stand in a line and then stepped back. I love the various interactions and expressions that happened.
