Elopements & Small Weddings

Deep Creek Lake Wedding Photographer

It’s because of my wedding experience here in Garrett County and at Deep Creek Lake that I’m a big fan of elopements and small weddings. The backyard of a lake house, on a trail surrounded by trees, in front of a waterfall, along the shoreline…we have all of these magnificent scenes (and more!) here in our corner of Maryland and when you elope or have a small wedding, it’s incredibly easy to make our spaces your wedding venue.

But beyond the ability to say “I do” in these beautiful settings, there’s also the opportunity to focus more on the two of you and throw in a bunch of adventure and personality while doing so. You can have a ceremony on your favorite hiking trail and wear hiking sandals as part of your wedding day attire. You can marry on a cold and wet winter day, wear a long red cloak to keep warm and then enjoy a private dinner in your cabin to celebrate. You can have 25 of your closest friends and family to a lake house for a backyard ceremony with an amazing view and dinner on the deck. And you can stand in the middle of a stream while exchanging your vows simply because you feel like it.

Also, paint this picture! You rent a house in the mountains or on the lakefront and invite your absolute closest family and friends to spend the weekend with you or rent the house next door. You have a wedding ceremony on the back deck, back patio or on the dock in the water. There’s no rush or concern to be exactly on time…heck you might not even need ceremony chairs because everyone will be fine just standing in the backyard! And afterwards, to celebrate, you enjoy a catered BBQ meal that was delivered to your house, a few coolers of drinks, and a nighttime fire with s’mores.

Each of the wedding stories above include unique choices made by my couples. Choices that reflect who they are together and what they enjoy together…and really, a wedding day picture that they were able to paint in their minds and easily bring to life. Big weddings with hundreds of people are tons of fun, but can you ask all of them to hike a mile and then stand in a stream with you? And what about that private gourmet meal in your cabin? Can you afford to splurge on dinner for a long list of guests?

And now, with COVID-19 affecting our everyday lives and leaving us restricted in our normal activity, are you able to have that “big wedding” with hundreds of people? If you’re simply just wanting to marry your love and do it soon (and maybe even have that large size wedding later), there is a solution for you! And boy, can we make that solution personally unique to you. 🙂

Now, more than ever, I am loving elopements and small weddings…and I think you may enjoy one, too!

Just the two of you…or with a small group of guests, and maybe your dog, too!
